Damn damn damn damn damn it all

Real quickly. The City Beat just got in to work and managed to grab a copy of today's paper -- you know the one with the photo of "Vote MacNamara Ward 2" signs at the top? Yeah. Sorry. That wasn't me. We screwed up big time. We just screwed up. Sorry to everyone else in Ward 2.

Update 4:50 p.m., 6/12/06: Peder Rice, a Ward 2 candidate, is pretty upset with the photo. He even mentioned legal options.

I empathize but I doubt there's anything he can do. We're not campaigning for Mac and the Constitution says we can print whatever we want even if it makes us look stupid.

If any of you are still wondering about motives, allow me to quote Hanlon's Razor: "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."

I guess we now know who the Herald would like to win in Ward 2...

No. It's not a matter of "want." Those photo panels at the top of the page are taken by our photographers for decorative purposes. They decide what they'll shoot and which panel they'll submit. The one that took that photo this weekend lives in East Grand Forks. Whoever laid out the page Sunday night wasn't paying attention and let it slip by. The idiot thing is at least two eyes should have looked at that page, though I'm guessing they're more focused on making sure no spelling errors slipped. The print out they looked at is also black and white, not color, so that red white and blue panel didn't leap out at them.

Tu-uyen,

Are you sure? I think I googled Grand Forks Forum yesterday and got: http://votemcnamara.com/home/about.php

Uh oh...this is pretty bad. Somebody(s) really goofed. Maybe Marcil/Forum will introduce a few layoffs after all? Just kidding...

But this is pretty bad...

Ay, caramba. It's not the Grand Forks Forum! That joke was funny for five minutes.

Yeah, it's dumber than dumb but I doubt it's going to have any impact on voters. I can't imagine someone thinking of voting for, say, Peder Rice, and deciding, on the basis of a picture in the Herald, to vote for Mac.

I hope the Herald apologies publically tomorrow to the readers and the 4 other candidates. This front page color banner advertisement was worth hundreds to McNamara. Now if he wins will he use the radio to promote his views and that of Doug C.?

The legal matters were more of a concern over the elections than anything to do with the Herald. I finished my campaigning yesterday, and I was hoping to have not so stressing a day today, only to find out about this.

I was upset, but I understand that these things do happen. Let's just hope that today's rocky start isn't a foreboding for tomorrow.

You say it would have no impact on voters.
Are you saying advertising in the paper is worthless?

Good call. I was thinking the same thing a couple of hours later.

I guess I'm projecting too much. If people read ads with a critical eye as I try to do then advertising wouldn't have the impact it does.

Don't you think, though, that people think a little harder about who they're going to vote for than, say, whether they're going to buy chicken at Hugo's?

Not those that merely place a check mark next to the (R) or (D) or whathaveyou, regardless of what they actually know about "their" candidate.
