Big news for a few: The Herz gets hitched

The biggest news for the City Beat this week was the wedding on Saturday of my friends former WDAZ personality Herryn Riendeau and Matt Herzog, or as friends like to call him, "The Herz."

The Riendeaus have roots in Gentilly, Minn., and the Herzogs in Cavalier, N.D., and, man, were there a lot of aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, neighbors, etc. I was the passive-aggressive usher, one of two, that tried to get them all seated at St. Peter's Church in Gentilly. (Talk about small world. Grand Forks city finance director John Schmisek, a friend of the family, was there. He said he'd brought his camera if he knew I'd be there in the penguin suit.)

The reception was at the Alerus Center and Herryn's mom, Lynn Erie, says the staff did a great job. I agree.

The proud parents, by the way, are Tim and Judy Herzog, Ted Riendeau and Lynn and Steven Erie.

Indulge me if you're not familiar with the newly minted Mr. and Mrs. Herzog. A remarkable number of the relatives have actually read this blog, so I'm indulging them.

Here's something for you general readers: If you're ever in the Gentilly area, arrange for a visit to the church. It's one of the nicest ones I've seen and, as a bonus, the little statuettes and stained-glass windows bear French inscriptions, indicative of the area's heritage.

Some family members of mine recently attended a wedding reception at the Alerus and they were very impressed with the experience. Looks like the Alerus has some good people in charge of events like this (one of whom is former WDAZ reporter Stephanie Byro, BTW). Good to see events like this at the Alerus go over well. After all, being able to hold receptions like this is one of the things that differentiates the Alerus from a "big barn" like the one to the south.

Nice comment grandforksguy. The Alerus Center's convention area is great for weddings and other large family functions. It provides additional income for the place. The Alerus is much better than the brick "echo" chamber in Fargo.

GFG, the big barn (Fargodome) was built to not have convention space because of pressure from Fargo hotels who didn't see the reason for a subsidized competitor.

There had been some comments on this blog about the Alerus Center competing with local hotels and restaurants for weddings.

I was kind of wondering this weekend how easy it would have been to pull something like the Herzog-Riendeau wedding off anywhere else in town. The reason is besides the large number of people -- seemed like 100 or more -- there was also a large dance floor to the side. One of the wedding guests, Aunt Jerry from Rugby or something like that, said she is/was in the catering business and usually the rooms are too small requiring a mad rush to clean up so guests can dance. Other wedding guests said they wished the Canad had been done sooner because that's where they would've stayed.

Having the Canad directly attached to the ballroom should really help out events like this. As it is, the Hilton seems to be functioning as the unofficial Alerus Center hotel which is fine, but it will be nice having a large hotel directly connected to the facility.

Hi! We had a great time seeing Grand Forks and meeting everyone. I'll try to post some pictures on my blog.

Hey Lisa! Let me know when you post the photos. Check this space some time. I'll mention our enlightening conversation about science. (Lisa's sort of a geneticist. She studies something like the interaction between proteins and DNA and their effect on the immune system. We talked about why scientists do research on seemingly inane topics.)

The wedding really was very nice and not being from Grand Forks I didn't know what the Alerus Center was. But it was absolutely beautiful. oh, P.S., so sorry about the "reveal" in the hall.

Hey Tu-Uyen,

This is Matt (Herz), we just got home Wednesday after missing our flight in Nice, France (not our fault). It caused us to stay in Paris one more night. That sounds like a good place to be stuck, but it didn't turn out that way- long story. Everything before that was a dream. I'm going to post my pictures on my website and try to stream some video, I have something like 4 hours of it. It needs some serious editing first.

Anyway, thanks again for ushering!
