Quickies: Canad goes smoke-free, EGF ready for Chamber HQ

* The East Grand Forks City Council is ready to vote on the land transfer to the Chamber of Commerce. The city wants the chamber to build its HQ at the corner of DeMers Avenue and Fourth Street Northwest and is giving the group the land for $10. The only condition is the group has to finish construction within three years.

* Canad Inns says its Grand Forks hotel will be totally smoke-free when it opens this spring. The city's smoking ban allows smoking in meeting rooms and hotel rooms, but Canad says there will be no smoking anywhere inside. Smoking will be allowed in designated areas outside.

The Winnipeg company is converting all of its existing hotels to smoke-free by Nov. 30.

Isn't East Grand Forks the City where I can not only get $5,000 toward new residential construction but also receive a tax abatement on the new construction for two years. What new construction is generating the other 2.7% of tax revenues? More smoke and mirrors from the eastsiders!

I think your comment was directed at the last post.

The 2.7 percent would come from new homes coming on the tax roll.

Bear in mind that property taxes in East Grand Forks, in general, are lower than in Grand Forks because cities in Minnesota lean more on the state for their funding. Which means your income tax will probably be higher in East Side than in Grand Forks.

Wait, I'm confused. Didn't both cities merge their chambers into one a few years back? Isn't this joint office located on North Third Street in Grand Forks? Why would EGF build a new facility then?

Why would they replace a perfectly good building (which the Chamber is trying to sell) and build a new one away from the businessess who pay the bill? Because they can! Aren't they also thinking of building a "GIANT" fountain to soak all the people who may think of visiting downtown. Have Money will spend, that is the GF/EGF motto!

Dain Bramage: When the chambers merged, part of the condition for the merger was to have HQ relocated to East Grand Forks. This helps reassure the jittery East Siders that they won't lose their identity.
