* Latest survey results from GF-EGF Chamber of Commerce: 72 percent oppose tribal casino based upon current information available. That's up from about 66 percent earlier this week. Significantly the number of respondents, nearly 400 of 900-plus Chamber members, is huge compared to past surveys.
The Chamber also posted a new survey asking how concerned members are about the landfill situation. So far: 114 respondents replied with an average score of 3.6 with 1 being "not worried" and 5 being "very worried."
Update 5:44 p.m., 5/19/06: Worry index on the landfill is up to 3.72 with 173 respondents. No change in tribal casino survey other than a few more respondents.
* East Grand Forks city leaders are thinking of starting an "Adopt-a-Camp-Site" program at the Red River State Recreation Area. City Council member Wayne Gregoire said he got the suggestion from a constituent. The RRSRA is being maintained by the city under a state contract but maybe some people think it could use a little more maintenance.
* Feds arrest five illegals at GF Wal-Mart Super Center construction site. They were not working for Wal-Mart but for Ahrens Concrete out of Iowa City, Iowa, a firm working for the general contractor. I was chasing the story earlier in the week based on a tip but Grand Forks Guy had it first here. Then I noticed WDAZ had it, too. Damn you Lacey Crisp!

There is nothing I love more than scooping you and Lacey Crisp. Hmmm, somehow that sounds dirty.
Seriously though, don't you wonder how I find these things out? Oh well, I don't mind helping out you regular news guys and girls...I can be your secret weapon. :)
Hey Guy,
You ain't no secret weapon! All three of the main media outlets in this town knows about you. Telephone, telegraph, tell GrandForksLife.
But no, I'm not curious how you find out. Maybe just a little. I respect your privacy.
grandforksguy....I read your blog, but there is a distinct difference between Tu-Uyen, myself and you; while you can publish anything you like and call it factual, Tu-Uyen and I have to take the time to get our facts verified by the right people. So even though you might think you "scooped" us....it doesn't mean we weren't working on the story for days already!
while you can publish anything you like and call it factual
You probably didn't intend it, but that sounds to me like you think I would publish "anything" and call it the truth. In fact, if I call something the truth it is almost certainly based in some truth. When I do post something about a rumor, I always state that the item is a rumor or that it is based on "word on the street". I don't make up stories and call them the truth to get hits. What I do is post stories that I haven't yet (or maybe never would) see in the traditional media outlets in town.
Anonymous, I do realize that you professional reporters have to get your facts a little straighter before you can go to print or in front of the camera, but I guess that is the benefit of being a hobbyist blogger like me.

Stop fighting people! Bloggers are not reporters and reporters aren't bloggers.
Guy scooped the press but he didn't say who said what, which he would've had to had he been a reporter. But I say let the fella have his credit anyway, even if later on we find out he was wrong on some of the details.
1) It's rare that we should have engaged citizens who know what's going on. That should be encouraged.
2) The more news out there the better. Sometimes a blogger will be able to get information out of a public official because he isn't a reporter. If only reporters reported, how would we have that information?
3) Blogs, for the most part, supplement the regular news media. A news hobbyist couldn't offer the same variety or depth of coverage as a bunch of paid (poorly paid, but still paid!) pros. And that's OK, he doesn't have to. His advantage is speed ours is depth, if we do our job right.
Well said, Tu-Uyen. Let's all be friends! :)
