Yuppies unite

Greater Grand Forks Young Professionals is hosting a get together at 5 p.m. this Thursday at Mike's Pizza in East Grand Forks. Thursday being our traditional day to meet and Friday being Cinco de Mayo, rules were bent so now it's Quatro de Mayo. Leinenkugel's pints will go for $2 (I didn't know it was Mexican, but what the hey). There'll be Cuervo specials. Ole! And a free nacho bar.

Why am I posting this? I'm not only a member, I'm the vice president or whatever. I'm on the board anyway. Click on the link and you'll notice that a) I appear to have some kind of facial tic going when the camera went off and b) though there are only guys in the picture, there are women on our board. They just didn't want to be seen with us.

GGF YP is a group founded by a bunch of us young professionals who decided it would be cool to have a social network of people like us, this being such a lonely town if you're not in college or, well, older. There's no age requirement so if you're young at heart, you'll feel welcome. Beside organizing social gatherings, we also have professional development seminars and opportunities to volunteer.

Some friends of mine have accused us of being some sort of singles club in disguise. Not true. There are lots of YP groups around the nation, such as in Fargo where it's part of the Chamber of Commerce and in Bismarck.

Update 3:13 p.m., 5/5/06:A reader asked just how many GGFYP members there are. My buddy Justin Schiele, GGFYP's social events chairman, reports that we have about 250 members, or people who have given their e-mails to us at various events. Typical turnout for events is aroud 40. The Quatro de Mayo event had 45 people. On our Web site, we've gotten 35,000 hits from 1,000-plus unique visitors.

Quatro de Mayo, by the way, was pretty cool. I made a couple of new friends and my buddy Pete Haga, who's also a GGFYP board member, hatched a plan to get more YPs involved more regularly. We both recently ran in a 5k race (we sucked) and decided that it would be fun to have a group to run with. Watch for more details on the GGFYP Web site.

It's just Pete and Tu Yuen. They try to meet girls. It's pretty lame.
