Quickies: Downtown apartments starting, Point2Point snubs Cirrus Design

* Bad news: Parking downtown will be getting a tad tougher on Monday due to the temporary closure of a part of the lot across the street from the Dacotah Hotel building. Really great news: The closure is so they can do soil testing for the apartment complex that's going up there. I reported it as the Dakota Block a few months ago but now it's called Riverview Apartments.

* More Canadians headed for North Dakota, presumably with wallet in hand and a shopping mall in mind.

* What gives? Point2Point Airways, formerly based in Grand Forks and now in Bismarck, says it won't be buying Cirrus Design planes. They're buying Canadian. Oh yeah, they got $1.25 million in federal grants by way of the city of Bismarck in August.

* Grand Forks Guy has more new biz announcements. Even made WDAZ.

* City of Grand Forks confirms the Point Bridge will be closed until early September.

Update 3:10 a.m., 7/27/06: A few things I negleted to mention:

* One of my colleagues, Carol Graham Brue, passed away recently, striken down by cancer. We had quite a few people show up for a ceremony at the Herald yesterday evening. The house was full of tears. She'll be missed.

* The second week of the summer block party Thursday night Farmer's Market at Town Square is tonight from 5 p.m. 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. There's also a concurrent summer block party. It's run by a some of my fellow Greater Grand Forks Young Professionals. Thanks to Farmer's Market president Cheri Reitmeier for the correction.

* The Third Street Gallery, owned by a couple of Young Professionals, is holding a silent auction tonight from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The social starts at 6 p.m. I'll be volunteering during the event so if you want to say "hi" or kick my *ss, come on down!

Tu-Uyen, given the parking situation, I think you should try to convince your co-workers to make this Monday a "Bike-To-Work-Day" (assuming the weather co-operates, that is.) You could introduce the idea as a sort of "do something good for yourself and others" mumbo-jumbo...Who knows, maybe it will catch on, and every Monday the bike racks outside the Herald will be full of Treks and Huffys. Well, whaddya think?

Ah yes, I tried that once. We don't have a shower here so biking means smelling like stale sweat the whole day. It's kinda warm out, if you hadn't noticed.

Actually, the lot that's partially closed on Monday is mostly for the people that live in the nearby buildings. We have our own lots and some reserved parking in the Central High lot.

Sorry, this is off topic. Why is there virtually no coverage of this in Grand Foks as the next big hope?

http://www.nascocorridor.com/

It's the NASCO superhighway

Just wondering.

I was at a presentation on this topic some time ago. Some fellows from Winnipeg came down to talk about it. I didn't do anything because I believe that we've done a similar story before -- This is not a new idea -- and there's been few major changes.

NASCO, if you read the Web site, is essentially a lobbying group focused on improving transportation infrastructure as a way to improve commerce. In other words, it's basically a coalition of different trade interests pushing for better highways and ports, etc. I think they also work to bring different businesses together.

Perhaps it's time to take a look at how far they've gotten.

Me again, I hear all kinds hyperbole on this...

"It's a toll highway, owned by the Spaniards, to facillitate illegal immigration to the States".

Perhaps I need to turn off the a.m. radio!

Haha. The paranoid fringe strikes again! I think some people aren't happy unless they're outraged.

Point2Point Airways is buying the Diamond Twin Star and D-Jet because the flying public wants a better all-weather aircraft and feel safer in twin-engine planes. P2P would have stayed with Duluth-based Cirrus if they could, because they started with Cirrus. That is not a snub. That is a business decision done to satisfy customers. Perhaps we can entice Diamond to open a plant in GFK with the 100 plane order. That is the appoach I wish you would take instead of go to the negative

I'm all for free trade but if government money is used to help a business, there ought to be some "made in America" requirement, even if it's just some components or assembly. It doesn't have to be Cirrus at all.
