EGF council gets a little risqué!

You'd never guess that city politicians have a great sense of humor from reading the newspaper. But aficianados of public meetings know better.

East Grand Forks council members were talking at length Tuesday night about cleaning up the drainage ditch on Northwest 23rd Street. It was a long discussion and probably seemed even longer for the six high school students who'd decided to attend the meeting for government class.

To lighten up the mood, Council member Wayne Gregoire noted that, in his time, the street was a little more isolated than it is now. "Twenty-third was considered 'Lover's Lane.' It was called the 'first mile'!"

Mayor Lynn Stauss added: "For me it was the 'second mile' but for Henry (Tweten) it was the 'third mile'!"

Stauss is a little older than Gregoire and Tweten is the senior most member of the council. So I wasn't sure if they were talking about the growth of the city or something else...

But I'm sure I know what those students -- four girls and two boys -- were thinking: EEWWWW!

My colleague from WDAZ, who will remain mercifully nameless, asked me: "Do they call going all the way the 'round trip'?"

Good one!

(No hate mail from older readers, please. Don't you worry, my generation will get ours when the day comes.)
