Lake Grand Forks?

An interesting idea emerged at Grand Forks City Council tonight: a new park with a lake in it.

Council President Hal Gershman said he's going to sound goofy saying it but he thinks the city should look into consolidating the stormwater retention ponds to be built south of town as part of the dike project. That way, the city could just build a park around the whole thing.

The idea isn't completely out of left field. City planner Brad Gengler said there are already some thought of creating parks around the retention ponds.

A colleague of mine from WDAZ said the city already has a lake: "It's called the Red River."

Me, I think it would be pretty neat to have a duck pond to run laps around. You don't really have that with the Red.

I think I had a post like this made over on MGF. Maybe Gershman read mine? Haha, doubt it. But it would be really cool to see a mini lake! Too bad I forgot about the council metting tonight. :(

Boy, Glassheim and Kreun were really having it out over this new dog park proposal. I gotta admit, I'm a bit suprised to see this thing coming almost "out of nowhere" to being pushed so heavily. I know we've talked about needing a dog park in GF, but I hadn't heard anything about this particular proposal until tonight. I'm thinking I'm more in line with Glassheim's reasoning on this issue...

Hey JGS,
I guess I hadn't noticed your post. Were you suggesting the exact same thing? Sometimes interesting ideas have a way of spreading on their own.
Anyway, I'm not so sure this came out of the blue. I mean, last night was the Committee of the Whole where things are supposed to be introduced. That's how the system was meant to work except they've got all kinds of other committees and task forces where ideas are discussed before they are televised.
Anyway, I can see why no one considered a public hearing necessary. Go down to that area. It's a long way to run before a dog can get to a residential neighborhood. I agree though that a public hearing might be in order.

Dave,
I don't really call University a "mega park" but a average park size, imo. And if you do look around the new housing developments, there really isn't a park in site. Who wants to drive to the middle of town to get to a park from the south-end or even the west side? I wouldn't so it's probably why it's one of the main topics now. A lake park would top it off for a new south-end park for the new developments.

It seems like any new park space we have been getting in recent years is devoted almost entirely to athletic activities. Where's the desire to build old-style parks like University and Riverside? We need parks that children can play in and you can take a stroll through. We need parks with beautiful gardens, trees, and bushes. I hope the park district understands that athletics are great, but in the past parks were not so exclusively tied to athletics. A park is fine on its own...it doesn't have to have a gimmick or a very specific purpose.
