Take your resolution and shove it

Haha. It'd be pretty funny if the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa ended up saying that the to Grand Forks City Council. Not that I'm expecting anything of that nature, but a) some tribal officials are apparently confused/infuriated with the way they've been treated while trying to get a resolution of support from the council and b) they're looking for other options.

The City Beat offers you two stories today.

One talks about the political maneuvering going on at the state and local level. Bill Johnson, the tribal consultant leading the casino effort, gets the feeling there's some conspiracy against the tribe by some members of the council. I'll let you figure out who. It's in the story.

The other story is about the other, other option for the tribe. Tribal chairman Ken Davis told me the other day that if the tribe can't get trust land in Grand Forks for a casino it could build casinos on existing trust lands near Williston, N.D., or between Bismarck and Minot. That's the other option. The other, other option is to leave all the restrictions behind and build a casino where the people really want casinos. That would be in Mississippi, the nation's third largest casino market by revenue.

I got some links for you to fiddle with:

* Edmonton, Alta., based Myriad Golf, doing business as Myriad World Resorts, is the company that's developing the whole casino and entertainment complex that Turtle Mountain would be a part of. Check out the slideshow in the intro page. That indoor golf course -- yes, you heard right, air-conditioned golf -- is HUGE.

Architect's rendering courtesy of Myriad World Resorts. If you really want to see how that golf course would look, check the image at the top of this page. Myriad rep Fred Haynes says the layout is different now, but this gives you a good idea of the size.

* Here's the press release mentioning Turtle Mountain buying a $40 million parcel at the Myriad development.

* Other media have been all over this story and I picked up the scent from this story and this story.

* Curious about this Tunica, Miss., place? Look here and here.

Update 9:43 p.m., 6/15/06: I just remembered that people might want to see the content of the letters that Bill Johnson and Gov. John Hoeven's legal counsel Duane Houdek exchanged. Here's Johnson's. Here's Hoeven's, page 1 and page 2.

I KNOW. DON'T RUB IT IN. Is this Lacey? Damn it, woman. Doesn't the scoop on that Mississippi angle count for anything?

You had two extra days to come up with the angle.....yes, it's Lacey.

Lacey Crisp, you're such a fierce competitor. Don't ever change. The Herald and WDAZ will always be at each other's throats, no matter who owns us.

Where would this comment go?...you haven't blogged about it yet. But, what's the deal? The State Board of Higher Ed and the AG's office say they won't use public/state money to fund a lawsuit against the NCAA, but whaddya call using the AG's staff, time, materials, etc.? Isn't that public/state money? If it smells like a fish...

Hey anonymous, I'd refer you to my colleague Tom Dennis at the prairie-pundit.blogspot.com.

I only know about city politics.

"It is Christensen who has threatened to work on a resolution retracting the mild support the council earlier issued, mild support that Christensen penned."

"Kreun, who is working with the tribe on behalf of the council, said he doesn't think the council has to do anything but let the tribe work out its differences with the state and federal governments."

Let the tribe seek out different opportunities...I really don't want their casino in Grand Forks. I also just don't see how there is any chance that any level of government (local, state, federal) is ever going to approve of a GF casino in the end...much less all three of them. They might as well start looking elsewhere. Guy Useldinger should also probably start revising the plans for his land...this time sans a casino.

By the way, why is it so easy to build casinos in Miss.? I know they may have more easy going local and state regulations, but doesn't the federal government still have to approve of off-reservation casinos?

Cool...Lacey Crisp has made an appearance in the GF blogosphere! Maybe now she'll start her own blog too?!?! Not that there is a shortage of GF blogs out there...this thing is growing like nuts.

No way is that broad blogging. See Rick Abbott's blog for the reason why. Also, they're not as blog-friendly over there. "Blurring the lines between journalism and opinion" is what one of them told me. Don't bother to fight that one. The practice is growing in journalism circles and they'll see the light one day.

Just curious, what's the difference between blogging and inviting commenting or having a radio talkshow, IE: VOD or MacTalk??
(Other than the obvious of course.)
(One's live and the other's dead, not really it's just not as live :-) )

Not much difference, I guess. Newspaper people are just jealous of the attention so we want some for ourselves.

Better to have the tribe seek out different opportunities...Casino in Grand Forks is harmful to most.
